My recommendation : Embark on a Wine Journey Through Burgenland

If you can’t join on these festivals, I would recommend signing up for a wine tour. It is always a privileged moment between you and the winemaker as there’s not so many people.

Tour description

Imagine yourself amidst the rolling hills of Burgenland, Austria, where vineyards stretch as far as the eye can behold. The sun-kissed grapes, brimming with flavor, whisper tales of a rich winemaking tradition that has been passed down through generations.

This was my poetic intro!

But more seriously, people underestimate the beauty of Burgenland as well so be sure to check out the region when you come visit!

After a one-hour drive from Vienna (pick-up from the hotel, don’t worry, you won’t have to drive) , your adventure begins with a leisurely walk through the cobblestone streets of Eisenstadt’s Old Town.

Of course, you can’t go to Eisenstadt without tasting the famous Esterhazy cake so you’ll make a stop there.

You can also visit the castle, which is one of Austria’s most beautiful baroque palaces.

And if you’re into classical music (well even if you’re not, you can’t go to Austria and ignore the huge musical print this country has), you’ll be able to learn about Haydn, who was a director of music and composer in the service of the Esterházy princes.

And there’s also a wine museum!

Anyway, back to our tour! Next, descend into the depths of a local wine cellar, where you’ll meet one of Austria’s oldest wine producers.

Then you’ll be off to Rust, a picturesque village nestled on the shores of Lake Neusiedlersee, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The day is coming to an end and it’s already time to go back to Vienna, full of memories!

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • You get to see the most popular destinations in Burgenland for one day : Eisenstadt, Lake Neusiedlersee and Rust
  • You get to taste the authentic Esterhazy cake (just for that, it’s worth it!)
  • It’s in English
  • You can drink and … not drive (in an air-conditioned vehicle which is really cool in summer)
  • Depending on what you want to do, you can always tailor this tour to your exact wishes seeing as it’s a private tour.
  • Also because it’s a private tour and with a professional, some doors will open to you and you will get to visit wineries and other places you wouldn’t have been able to.

Cons:

  • The tour is limited to a few stops, so you may not see all of Burgenland’s attractions.
  • The tour may not be suitable for budget travelers.
  • The tour is conducted in English, so you may have difficulty understanding the guide if you are not a fluent speaker.
